A Real Wake-Up Call on Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy affects one in every 1,000 people. The good news is that is also can be treated. Sufferers can go back to sleeping only at night, like the rest of us try to. "Narcolepsy is not curable," says Joyce Walsleben, RN, PH.D, associate professor of medicine at New York University School of Medicine and past director of NYU's Sleep Disorders Center. "But it is very well controlled with drugs that have far fewer side effects than those used years ago."

Narcolepsy Under-diagnosed

Popular misconceptions of the narcolepsy, combined with a variety of symptoms that can mimic seizures, depression or just plain laziness, have led doctors to believe that narcolepsy may be grossly under-diagnosed. Narcolepsy is so poorly understood that it often takes 10 years from the onset of symptoms to a proper diagnosis.
